A Message for Young Writers Facing the Writing Test

My Dear Young Writers,

When you sit down to take the writing test, take a deep breath, remember what you’ve learned, and don’t let the prompt or the sheet of blank paper scare you. Shake your fingers at your side and stay loose.  You can always think of something to write. Your mind is working all the time. You can’t stop thinking if you try. But don’t think too long about what to write. Get an idea and start writing.

All you have to do is tell a story that has a beginning, middle, and end. Tell a true story if you can think of one. If not, make up a story. No one but you has to know that you made it up. Pretend that you’re writing a movie or a TV show.  Be descriptive so that your readers can see the setting, characters, and action.

After you’ve finished writing your story, read what you’ve written to make sure that you haven’t left out any words or punctuation. Then, put your pencil down and take another breath.

Remember: Writing is like anything else you do. You get better through practice. You’ve got your whole life to get writing right.

Good luck, my friends, and keep writing.
